Survey said....

I surveyed my students to see what their top three favorite recipes that we made. The results are in:

1st place: individual pizzas (we made these for our final this week and I must say they were a success!)
2nd place: stir fry chicken
3rd place: sherbet punch (from our party unit)
4th place was a 4 way tie: German Pancakes, Pazookies, Soft Pretzels, and Smoothies
5th place: dipped chocolates, mini cheesecakes
and dead last: the vegetable lab.

I think this was rigged though because I keep all of the recipes in the front of the room for the students to take whenever they want and they kept telling me that the vegetable recipes were gone and asked me to make some more copies of them. Someone liked them!

The other part of the survey was: what did you learn in this class? Most frequent answer was to set a proper table and table manners (one boy even said, "to act like a gentleman"). I wish I had spent more time on this because it obviously had at least some effect on them. Not one student knew how to set the table properly...and I'm not talking about a formal place setting, just everyday table setting. Many of them said they never eat at the table or they just serve themselves from the pots and pans on the stove. I'm thinking this is really becoming a lost art.

The other thing that the students said they learned was how to sew on a button. Yep, that's one they'll take with them. It was sort of fun to teach a skills class rather than an academic class.

Next week we're just wrapping things up and then Thursday is the last day. I am SO ready for this to be over!

You should be proud of all that you have taught your students Lauri. How sad that most of them did not know how to set the table. It is sad to think of how many families probably do not even eat dinner together. I'm sure glad my mom taught me those things.

Seriously? not one student could set a table? Kind of sad. The older our kids get the harder it is to sit down together each day, but I've got to say I still have a sit down dinner most every night (even if no one shows up). It is sad that it's not a family activity that happens as often as it should.
So, do you teach a summer school course? I need to know what Pazookies are and how to make them.
What are you doing with them to survive the last week?

Lauri,
I would have thought the sweet things would have been top on their list! And isn't it sad that families don't sit together to eat the evening meal much anymore. We ALWAYS did! Always! And now, with just Greg and I, we sit together, but often times in front of the telly! Or at a restaurant, or on the patio....no rules.
You taught them things that they will take with them for life!! Way to go Mrs. Benson!!
