Today as I was clicking away on my computer, I was thinking how glad I am that I learned how to type using correct fingering on a keyboard.
When I was 12 years old, I stayed with my grandmother for the summer. To keep me busy, she had me take a summer school class at the elementary school just down the street. I learned how to type that summer as I went down for a couple of hours every morning for a few weeks. Guess who the teacher was? My other grandma. She was a school secretary and taught typing in the summer (I suppose to earn extra money during the months she didn't work).
I remember practicing sentences such as:
The quick brown fox jumped over the lazy dog.
or
Now is the time for all good men to come to the aid of their country.
Does anyone else remember those sentences?
Anyway, I am so glad Grandma taught me where to put my hands on a keyboard, and made me practice, practice, practice until I got faster. As a 12 year old, I was typing 35-40 wpm. I ought to test myself and see how fast I can type...I'm sure it's around 60 wpm.
And speaking of typing...does anyone remember those archaic typewriters we used to use? We had to scroll the paper in hit the return key at the edge of the paper. If we wanted multiple copies, we had to use carbon paper. And making corrections was a major pain!
Ahh...the good old days!

I loved to type. I also remember those sentences with which we would practice and gain speed. I am a very fast typist. My fingers FLY!!
I remember!! All good men come to the aid of their country. I even took typing in college.
I am so with you! So grateful that I learned in high school, it has served me well in all of my jobs, and in college doing papers. It is amazing how fast we can be when we type everyday!! Thankful for my computer and the delete key!! Grateful for my typewriter that I have to use that has auto correct!!
Ahh, good times! I have been keeping my eyes open for a good old heavy manual typewriter. I think it will be fun for grandkids one day.
I am surprised that although fingering is taught today, it's not really emphasized and my kids have a weird (and I think ineffecient) fingering system.
I remember that summer at Grandma's house. I was taken to violin lessons at the school.
I'm horrible at finger placement. Infact, I'm not a super efficient typer at all. I'm a little jealous.
Yes! I remember too. I love the clicking sounds made by the typewritter and the 'ding' it would make. Saturday I was cleaning out a drawer and came across carbon paper. After studying it I reluctantly threw it away. It was a difficult moment.
I absolutely remember old typewriters. I got an electric typewriter as a high school graduation gift so I could type all my college papers. It was so high-tech! I am also glad I can type. I resisted when my mom wanted me sign up for a typing class in high school but it is truly one of best skills I ever learned!
We really are spoiled having computers. It was so hard to correct mistakes on typewriters. But, knowing how to type is a great skill. Typing and shorthand are the skills that got me summer jobs when I was in college.
