Role Model?

Has anyone seen the commercial showing cute, young girls making statements such as, "she inspires me", "she believes in me", "she is one of my best friends", "she has awesome style", "she shows me I can be anything". The commercial really caught my attention and was wondering who they were talking about. At the end, BARBIE is flashed on the screen.

Really? I loved Barbie when I was a young girl but I wouldn't have considered her my best friend nor did I believe she inspired me.

As I have been thinking about this, I found this information on-line:

  • If Barbie were an actual women, she would be 5'9" tall, have a 39" bust, an 18" waist, 33" hips and a size 3 shoe.
  • Barbie calls this a "full figure" and likes her weight at 110 lbs.
  • At 5'9" tall and weighing 110 lbs, Barbie would have a BMI of 16.24 and fit the weight criteria for anorexia. She likely would not menstruate.
  • If Barbie was a real woman, she'd have to walk on all fours due to her proportions.
  • Slumber Party Barbie was introduced in 1965 and came with a bathroom scale permanently set at 110 lbs with a book entitled "How to Lose Weight" with directions inside stating simply "Don't eat."
No wonder so many girls have body image issues.

I had heard some of those figures previously but I had no idea about the slumber party Barbie! Oh, wow. What sick person busts out the scale at a slumber party anyway? I thought the whole point of those parties was to have an excuse to eat chocolate at midnight. Maybe that's my problem...Haha :P

How sad is that!
I haven't seen that commercial but I hate that. Especially as a mother of daughters!

I haven't seen that commercial. Those stats about Barbie are very interesting. I liked playing with Barbie as a little girl, but can say I was never really "inspired" by her.
