When I was growing up, my mother had Franciscan stoneware--Desert Rose pattern. It made a beautiful table setting. After she passed away, my sister inherited the dishes. A few years ago, she told me that the dishes were badly chipped, missing pieces, stained, etc. But she was able to get a complete set that was in much better condition and she was getting rid of the older ones. I told her not to get rid of them because there was probably something we could do with them. For Christmas that year, I got a box filled with the old dishes as well as a cute patio table. Cindy suggested I make a mosaic with the dishes for it.
I loved the idea but it seemed like a daunting project so I put it off--for a year and a half! This summer, Cindy came over and we began. The first thing I did was give the table a good coat of paint.

Then we began breaking dishes. We were laughing, wondering if mom was saying, "girls! what are you doing to my dishes?" or if she was getting a kick out of the fact that they were still being useful.

Next we began putting a pattern together. We found that we could break the dishes in such a way to get the color of pieces we wanted rather than just random breaks.

As we began laying more and more fragments on the table, we realized that the table wasn't going to support the weight without reinforcement. Cindy took the table home for her husband to look at. When she brought it back a few weeks later, he had added some decorative support. I love the new look. So once again, we began laying out the pieces.
This week, I grouted it and now it's ready for use.

I think mom would be pleased.

Oh Lauri!! What a wonderful way to repurpose something, and something so special no less! What a beautiful job you did, and I know she would be pleased!!! I love that pattern too. I have bird bath that is made with broken pieces of china, and I love it! Way to go!!!!

Wow, you amaze me! So crafty! It looks great!
That is amazing!!! Way to go!
That is so very cool. What a wonderful way to remember your mom. Much better to see it and use it then have it closed up and chipped in a box. I am sure she is honored. :)
My comment is basically what my mom said... What a neat way to re use something so special to you. The table looks great!
I inherited my Grandma's dishes with the same pattern:) I think you should submit your work to HGTV or something - it looks awesome!
I can't wait to see it! Looks like it turned out wonderful
I hope you've already sent it to design sponge. I love it.
I LOVE it! What a great idea!!
Oh my gosh! This is the cutest table ever!! I inherited EVERYTHING of my mom's when she died two years ago and she was almost 96, so as you can guess, everything she had is very OLD. Your idea has given me such inspiration to do something meaningful with her OLD dishes. I love it! Where did you get the cute table?
by the way...your hair looks really cute in that first picture.
It is so beautiful! Way to go! I made a mosaic table awhile back and I loved it, but I left it in the rain and it got all warped. I want to do another one but this time I will make sure to do it right do it will last. Yours turned out so amazing.
That was a fun project. I'm glad you had the courage to take the first swing with the hammer to mom's dishes. It looks great all finished.
you are amazing...teach me!!!!
So beautiful!! I've always thought it would be fun to do something like this with dishes.
