Stockings, Hose, Nylons

Whatever you call them, they are becoming a thing of the past. It used to be a right of passage for a girl to begin wearing nylons. For me, it was age 12--I couldn't wait to start wearing them because it meant that I was finally growing up.

Somewhere in the past 10 years, nylons have become passe'. In fact, you can hardly find them in the stores anymore. I think I am one of only a few women who still consider them to be an essential part of her wardrobe. I just think they polish an outfit (I know, I'm old fashioned).
But another reason I wear them is because they disguise unsightly varicose veins.
So what does everyone else think about this topic? I'd like to hear your opinion....to hose or not to hose; that is the question.

Sorry Lauri, but NO HOSE!!! Now...I am surely just as old fashioned as you are. I recall the golden age for me, when I was allowed to hear hose. BUT...I had to wear knee high socks with them at first. Hose are out, and I am so glad!!! I hated them. They are uncomfortable and hot, and I would rather have my varicose veins showing!!! Sorry...I usually agree with everything you say. But for me, it would have to be, no hose!

I generally hate nylons... especially during the summer. They're hot and uncomfortable. Actually, I like to wear black nylons... but for some reason I don't like nude/tan/brown ones. Weird I know.

Yay for the vericose vein gene in our family! Nylons for me always. I get the idea of no nylons for women most of the time, except for very dressy occassions - it looks too casual with an elegant outfit.

Well...I was raised by a beautiful, classy woman like yourself and it was also a big deal for me to finally get to wear hose. I've also had ugly veins my whole life, and so it was just a double plus! HOWEVER, once I started realizing how itchy they were, I ditched them. That being said, I always feel more comfortable when I do wear them. And I totally wear tights all the time. I guess i'm in and out, and super iffy. I own a bunch, but I wear them rarely.

I am probably one of the few people who agree with you. I think my legs look better with them on. I actually like to wear nylons. I am finding that women in Alaska wear them more often (probably because it is always cold here.) I'm glad because I don't stick out as the only one wearing nylons.

I had to wear nylons for 18 months straight on my mission...not comfortable while tracting in the humidity. The second I got home I ditched them and havent worn them since!

Hmm, well I do can't remember the last time I wore nylons...
oh wait I can... I was 16, working at Hunny's restaurant in Corona and our uniform was tan shorts with nylons underneath. I hated it. I got a rash from heat that was irritated by the nylons and I don't think I have worn them since!

I love all of the funky tights that are in now though!

I have silently followed your blog for about 5 months now and enjoy it. Today in church I was actually noticing hose vs no hose. The women in my age group, that same as you, are pretty much half and half. My observation was that to hose is better. It just looks more finished and lilly white legs are not attractive. So I will panty hose it forever. But I live in California and not Arizona.

Hose are SO OUT right now. So much that I sometimes think they look tacky...mostly if they're a plain hose in a nude color.

However, worn correctly, they can polish off an outfit and of course make your legs look better. Right now though, I feel it's a MUST to have some kind of pattern in your stockings if you wear them...a seam up the back, stripes, they even have subtle fishnets now.

Tights are a totally different story. I pulled mine out for their season debut the week after labor day. I spend the fall and winter in tights. LOVE THEM.

One more thing... I wouldn't wear bare legs with a business type - tailored skirt or suit unless I made sure I was shaved and lotioned and tanned. Or to church...no matter what I was wearing, but most of my church clothes are pretty tailored / dressy.

Oh how I loathe hose!! I will wear tights, but no, no, no hose!!

I think with the right outfit, the hose is the finishing touch. That being said, I HATE the shimmer hose... They remind me of my great-grandma. I think tights in the Fall and Winter are so cute with knee length skirt/dress, but bare though, is my favorite way to go!

I couldn't wait to move from Utah so I didn't have to wear nylons to church to keep warm. THEY HURT and ARE SO UNCOMFORTABLE! Props to you for being able to wear and actually enjoy such a miserable garment!

It's probably my age, but I'm with you Laurie. If I'm wearing a dress, I feel naked if I don't have nylons on. I agree that here in Arizona they can be hot and uncomfortable, but going without, to me, would be like going somewhere in my pajamas.

When we lived in California I wouldn't have dreamed of going to church without nylons on but since we've moved to St. George (the desert) I'm not sure I even own a pair anymore. Now that I think about it, I do have a few pairs of black to wear with my black shirts in the winter but I wouldn't wear a pair of nylons if you paid me in the summer. Plus I have a calling in a YSA ward and it's already hard enough being the old lady in the ward, nylons would really date me.

I totally agree! If a person has model legs, maybe. Most people do not. You're right. They polish off the outfit.
