A PINK SLIP!
Unfortunately, it looked more like this one:

There had been several indications that this was coming. Frankly, I don't know how I have taught this long without a teaching certificate ( I only have substitute certification). Still, when it happens, it sort of rattles you.
Here are some good things about this:
1. It was never my intention to teach school. This is not what I had planned on doing, it just fell in my lap and once I was comfortable with it, I never looked for anything else. This will be my opportunity to look for something I might enjoy more.
2. I am finished with my Masters degree in three weeks...great timing!
3. I am in a better financial position than most. Kevin really took good care of me so I don't have a house payment or a car payment, thank heavens! But still, I need to eat.
4. I am the employment specialist at church. I have access to a lot of information about job searching and available jobs
This is whats not so good...
1. Arizona is one of the hardest hit states as far as the recession goes. There are thousands of people out of work (just this week, the news reported that something like 1500 teachers in the Phoenix area had been laid off). It's not going to be easy to find work right now.
So, my friends, do you have any suggestions for me to make this easier? I don't want sympathy, just good suggestions about being marketable, and having the edge over the thousands of other people who are looking for the same jobs that I am. And if you live in Arizona, do you know of any open positions?

Oh Lauri, I am so sorry!
What is your masters in? I thought you wanted to teach? What would your dream job be?
Thank heavens you are in good shape financially. That will give you time to do your research and really find exactly what you want.
Best of luck to you.
So sorry to hear that Lauri! Our prayers are with you to find a great job!! We thought of moving this year there, but we heard the sad state of affairs for teachers there a month or so ago....
We are in a similar situation here-times are getting tougher everywhere- to stand out I think you have to sell yourself- and knowing what little I know of you- that won't be difficult- this time of uncertainty won't last- a great opportunity will present itself, if we are doing all we can to prepare- I know you are. There were some great Conference talks last weekend that helped us- I am sure you took heed too!
Take care!
Oh my goodness. This economy ..uggh! I liked the first pink slip better. My prayers are with you, and if I hear of any good ideas I will pass them on for sure.
Lauri, I was so excited when I saw that pink slip! Then you explained that it was not a beautiful pink puffy petticoat. I am so sorry. I wish I knew what to tell you about how to find a job. You are an amazing woman. Anyone would be blessed to hire you.
I will share with you advise Craig gave our son who just lost his job.
Simply stated it was this: Ask the Bishop, Relief S. Pres,Stake Pres. or anyone else you know who knows a lot of people and ask their permission for you to check in with them on a regular basis. You would like to make a report to them weekly or so regarding the businesses you have sent resumes to see if they know of anyone who works for any of the companies. Networking is the key.
Craig and our son were amazed after attending Gen. Priesthood mtg. that similar advise was given!
Good luck...I know Arizona is really struggling right now.
Cameron's police department is hiring...you would definitely get hired because you are a woman =)
You should rent out your house and then go live with Katie. ITs a win, win situation. You get a monthly check and Katie gets a live in babysitter!
What an upbeat post. I appreciate it especially since Charly got a "pink slip" too lst week. (I'm actually really glad his pink slip isn't the kind you pictured first...). This is really one of life's challenges...but that doesn't make it any easier. I will keep my ears open and pass along any leads I hear about. It isn't easy, but its all about faith. When we remain faithful, God does take care of us. That is what Charly and I are telling ourselves now. We are viewing this as an opportunity to demonstrate faith to our children. This too will pass. Meanwhile, network and contact the state legislature about fixing this mess!
Pay your tithing and as generous as you can fast offering. I can not even begin to tell you the blessings that have come to our family because of this. It may seem a simple thought but it is very powerful. Network, network, network! We have literally put hundreds of applications online and have not received one call. Our best leads have come from people we know. Remember you are not alone and draw on the love and support of friends (like me). I love you and will keep you in my prayers!
Wow! I know what a challenge it is to be without a job. We have gone through it several times with Brent loosing his job. (Thankfully he has a job now.) Do all that you can (networking is soooo important) and then trust the Lord. When you are a full tithe payer and keep the Sabbath day holy, He has promised you blessings. In Doctrine and Covenants we are promised that the fullness of the earth is ours when we keep the Sabbath day holy. When you pray, remind Heavenly Father that you are doing your part and ask for his promised blessings. Miracles happen--sometimes not in the way that we think. I know you will be blessed. (I'm sure you have food storage so that is a blessing also.)
Dear Lauri,
Looks like lots of great advice out here! You are wise to let everyone know you're looking! Be assured that everything will work out. Move forward with absolute faith. There is a plan and it's just for you!
There are a lot of great resources on the internet and I've known more than one person who found their job on the internet. Like Fred - he was unemployed for 15 months but he was determined to get into the same field from which he was let go.
Sending lots of love and prayers!
I am so sorry Lauri! I wish I had a grand idea for you but I don't. Just wanted to say good luck finding what you want to do.
And I am laughing at Traci's advice. That's an option.
Lauri
You will be in our prayers! Lots of good advice from good friends so far.
Hi Lauri, I'm broken hearted about your "pink slip". I have heard that things have been especially difficult in AZ regarding job loss, etc. You are very fortunate that you are not burdened by debt, etc. Once again, listening to the Prophet is a good idea, isn't it? Somehow I don't feel too worried about you, I know you have the resources to find the "just right" thing for you, plus, you have the "Master Gardener" right in your own family so I'm not worried about you eating either!!! Good Luck, I'm not trying to "make light" of a difficult time but I have confidence in YOU!
If you get hungry, Heaven forbid, I should be harvesting some artichokes soon...
I think the first pink slip is much cuter! Bummer. Will you remind me what your degree will be in? I know you weren't planning on teaching HS full time, but do you like teaching? My brother in law has done some teaching with University of Phoenix (with a Masters, not a PHD).
