My Life is Pathetic...

...I have nothing to write about except my crazy students. It's Friday...time for another story.

My students were requesting cheesecake so I pulled this recipe out of the archives and let them try it. There were only 5 ingredients so I didn't think they could mess up. Who was I kidding?

Recipe:

Preheat oven to 350
Line 18 muffin tins with cupcake wrappers. Place one vanilla wafer on the bottom of each tin. Mix 2 8oz packages of cream cheese, 3/4 cup sugar, 1 T. lemon juice, and 2 eggs. Beat until smooth. Fill muffin tins 2/3 full with filling. Bake 12-15 minutes. Let cool. Top with berries.

Simple. Right?

One group of girls who never seem to get the recipe right seemed to be proud of themselves that it turned out so well. When they took it out of the oven, I told them it looked like the recipe was a success this time. They were beaming from ear to ear. As they took the first bite, they spit it out and told me how terrible it was. I was thinking they just didn't like cheesecake. "this is gross...it has no flavor." I reviewed with them what they put in to it...cream cheese? check. Eggs? check. Lemon juice? check. Sugar? "um I think we forgot the sugar". They tried to sprinkle 3/4 cup on the top of 18 cheesecakes (like that's going to work!) and ended up throwing them all out.

I think that was the only recipe disaster. I'm just always surprised at how long everything takes. They come in the door running, pick up their supplies at the supply table, and still don't get it all finished before the bell rings (50 minutes). I demo it for them the day before, they take step by step notes, and they continue to come up to me and ask me what to do next or if they're doing it right. Clean up is always problematic. Some students try to sneak out with dirty dishes still in the sink or without wiping up their counters. I tell them that if the FDA came in to our kitchens, we'd probably be shut down.

Oh well, it makes for good blogging.

No sugar? BLECH!!! Everything is better with sugar. I'll have to try that recipe. Sounds like something I can handle...and I don't bake. I promise not to forget the sugar.

I am going to try that recipe- it sounds simple- and trust me, I won't forget the sugar!!
By the way, how are things going with all the teacher layoffs out there? We found that Tolleson High is hiring a Spanish teacher, but with all the layoffs there, we figure it will fill quickly. Hope you find one for next year soon!!

Everything is better with sugar. It's funny that sugar would be the ingredient that a jr high student would forget. . . the staple of their diet.

I remember making chocolate chip cookies in our home ec class and they were awful!! We then tried to sew shorts and mine ended up two sizes smaller than they should have been. I was a home ec failure!
