Happy Birthday, Arizona

I know February 14 is Valentines Day but it is also the day Arizona became a state in 1912.  We're 100 years old.  Many events have been planned in Arizona to celebrate and my friends and I went to one celebration last Saturday night.

The Mormon Tabernacle Choir came to Arizona and although I have heard them perform in church settings, this was a little different with patriotic music, folk songs, and American classics.  There was an African-American soloist singing some Negro Spirituals that enthralled the audience.  A special guest conductor was invited to lead the choir and orchestra and the crowd went wild when Sandra Day O'Connor was invited to the stage.  She was quite good and seemed to know a little bit about conducting music.  She turned to the audience and led all of us in singing "This Land is Your Land."

It was a delightful evening. We rode the light rail into downtown Phoenix and enjoyed a fun evening together.  (Why didn't I get any pictures of us?  We looked pretty cute!)  It felt very metropolitan since most of our entertainment is in Mesa.

And not to forget another important anniversary, it is the year of my grandmother's birth.  She also would have been 100  years old and she loved to tell people that she was born the year Arizona became a state.

Rachel and Dave and I were at the mo-tab show Saturday night too. Brady and Roxanne went Friday. We all enjoyed it - much different than their Sunday performances. Why didn't I know Grandma's birthday was 1912? Happy birthday Grandma.

I think it's cool that Arizona became a state on Valentine's Day. I was surprised, given the extreme conservative bent of the state currently, that Arizona state government was actually the most "progressive" in the union when it was admitted 100 years ago. We certainly do have an interesting, not to mention beautiful, state.
