I learned two things at school today:
1. 7th/8th graders will eat ANYTHING
2. Whether or not they have a working recipe, they manage to create havoc in the kitchen.
We've been talking this week about the importance of correct measurements and I've had them practice doubling and halving a recipe. Turns out that math freaks them out even in FACS class. Anyway, today, I gave them a recipe that was supposed to teach them the importance of correct measurements. The recipe was something like this:
3 dribbles of corn syrup
1 dit dat of salt
3 globs of brown sugar
1 large dab of peanut butter
5 blobs of rice crispies
2 handfuls of corn flakes, slightly crushed
3 sprinkles of chocolate chips
itsy bitsy bit of vanilla
They had to determine how much of each thing they wanted, come up the the front table and get their ingredients, and go back and cook it. It was hilarious. They kept asking, "is this what it's supposed to look like?" (How do I know? I don't know what a dribble of corn syrup is either!) Then we put a sample of each kitchen's creation in the front and discussed how different each one interpreted the recipe and the importance of exact measurements.
In some cases we had crunchy munchy soup (yes, they actually ADDED a cup of water because it "seemed too dry" sorry, you lost 30% of the grade for not following the 'recipe') and in other cases we had crunch munchy powder because there wasn't enough liquid. Some kids burned the brown sugar in the pan and decided that since it wasn't coming off, they would just put a dirty pot back in the cupboard (another 30% off their grade!) But the end result was that the kiddos loved it and would eat it no matter what the outcome was...crazy kids!
Lesson learned!

Oh mercy!!!
I feel for you Lauri!
What a great lesson. Very creative and it made a good point.
That's a fun lesson. I know this has been harder than you thought, but you're good at this.
I am terrible at measuring! I just improvise half the time- I probably would've been in the soupy group= I have a tendency to add more liquid! Fun times! I love all your teaching stories!!
Oh, that is hilarious!!! :) Although, the ingredients to crunchy munchy goop sound pretty good! :)
That's funny for so many reasons. The fact that they ATE their creations is hilarious and proves the idea that kids are willing to eat if they are part of the process.
I cook with itsy bitsy dribbles of ingredients all the time - and I make my family eat it!
You are so very creative. Sounds like a fun class (except for the dirty pan in the cupboard).
This was a very creative lesson. You ARE good at this. I sure enjoyed hiking the Wind Cave Trail Saturday. Let's find another trail to conquer soon. :-D
makes me laugh!
