Would you like some cheese with that WHINE?

You know when you make something for dinner that one person in the family doesn't like and the whining begins? Multiply that by 120 and you'll know how my day was yesterday. I told the students that for our cooking lab, we were having a vegetable bake off. Yes, I knew it wouldn't be their favorite thing to do, but seriously, I had had it with their whining by the end of the day and was about ready to tell them that we wouldn't be cooking for the next several weeks.

So, I was anticipating the worst today and was pleasantly surprised. I had each kitchen make a different kind of vegetable and when everyone was finished, I had them go around and sample each one. They ate every bite and asked for more. We had spaghetti squash (served with spaghetti sauce), stir-fry zucchini, cheesy potatoes, glazed carrots, broccoli with cheese sauce, and green beans with orange butter. With the exception of the green beans, every recipe was a hit! Some of these kids had never had fresh vegetables and had no idea what they were missing. One boy came up and took one of each recipe and was going to share them with his mom. I couldn't believe the positive comments coming out of the same mouths that yesterday were telling me that they weren't coming to school if they had to cook vegetables.

And finally, check out my new apron. I convinced my niece, Roni, to make me one for my new assignment. Didn't she do a great job? I LOVE it! (I think she need to get an etsy account and sell these, don't you?)

Isn't it funny that kids grow up without eating vegetables? (or real vegetables anyway, not the school cafeteria variety). Good for you. And I'll bet it was fun to have a competition "bake-off".

I can't even believe how well it turned out after all that whining. REally, it looks fun. Good for you for making the kids eat their vegetables....and like them. It's a way better story with pictures.

I LOVE the fabric combination on that apron. Really cute.
