Dancing with the Stars....or Asteroids...or Meteorettes?

I grew up in Northern Arizona and went to Winslow High School. Winslow is right at the edge of the Indian Reservation...not a real high class joint as you can imagine. But I have some fun memories of growing up in a small town and some of the shenanigans we got involved in.

At the first pep assembly of the school year when I was a Freshman, I watched the drill team dance and decided that I REALLY wanted to be on that squad. All year long, I watched them and practiced so that when try-outs came up, I was ready. But, I didn't make the team. The next year, I tried out again and again didn't make the team. At the beginning of my junior year, they had a special try-out because so many had moved over the summer. I tried out again and the third time was a charm. I not only made the team, but was voted captain. So my junior and senior year of high school, I was captain of the Winslow High School Meteorette squad (that's right...we were called meteorettes due to Winslow's close proximity to Meteor Crater).

Since that time, I've always loved to dance and imagine myself as a chorus-line dancer (think Rockettes) or a background dancer on a broadway musical. Several years ago when I was Young Women's president, we were having a female bonding night and were sharing deep/dark secrets about ourselves...things we'd like to accomplish. I told them I'd like to be on So You Think You Can Dance. They were all silent for a minute and then simultaneously all started howling with laughter at the same time. WHAT'S SO FUNNY ABOUT THAT?!

I don't think there is anything at all funny about you wanting to go on a dance show. My secret.....I lived for Dancing With The Stars. I would love to do that show!!!!!

I didn't realize you didn't make it so many times. I just knew you were captain so I figured you were one of the best. Little did I know you barely made it by the skin of your teeth. Now that makes more sense;)

I bet you were terrific! Tryouts stink! I give you kudos for trying 3 times- I would've given up after the first! That is a funny mascot for a HS= but then again it is out west! I grew up here where our mascot is a poisonous nut! Where did they come up with that!
I love the dance shows, and if I could even remotely dance, I would love to be on that show. When I was younger, my best friend and I would watch Dirty Dancing (I didn't know what it was really about, I just loved the end...) and pretend that we were "Baby" and Patrick Swayze would hold us up by his wonderful arms and dance with us! We were desperate, I tell ya, but I loved it and remember it all the time!
Love the old pictures, by the way!

Way to hang in there and not give up!! If I had to confess one of my long ago dreams it was to marry Donny Osmond. Can you imagine? Growing up in Georgia and being 1 of 2 LDS girls in my high school, I just knew I had a shoo in with him. His picture was plastered all over my bedroom wall and sadly, yes, I was known to kiss one of those pictures at night before going to sleep and dreaming of him. I think you beat me by far with a far more worthy dream!! Love ya-

Hi Laurie! It's Kelly (Enlow). I was looking at Katie's blog and came across yours. I have the same secret as you... I imagine myself as one of the professional dancers on Dancing With the Stars. I think it would be SO much fun! Although I don't think I could bend and twist like they do!

How did you end up in the back row of that fantastic Meteorettes picture? You should have been front and center, team captain and all. You should have been the ONLY one doing splits in front of the rest of the girls waving their pom poms to your glory.
Do you still remember some of your routines? Maybe you could use one to audition for "So You Think You Can Dance"! (btw- I love that show.)

As much as I loved watching Idol, if I could have my pick between the two talents it would be dancing. That show is so inspiring. I think I spent too much time watching Idol though I'm feeling a bit guilty. I told myself I couldn't watch So You Think You Can Dance until auditions are over. (And I've kind of made an intentional point to try to hold off on finding out when that is.) I feel lazy being a show follower. Maybe you could write updates. :) I think your friends were laughing because they too wanted to be on!! :)
