Mango Mania

I have recently discovered MANGOS. I don't know where I've been but I have walked by them in the grocery store time after time. One day I decided to pick one up and try it and I was hooked! My problem is how do you get it from this:
to this:
I can't figure out how to cut it without a lot of waste. Can anyone help me?

Speaking of mangos, here is a salad I made last week that was delicious! It has lettuce greens, avacado, mango, red onion, raspberries, and a raspberry vinegarette.

One more question: Does anyone have a good recipe for mango salsa?

So I consulted my expert husband on this one. He served his mission in the Phillipines and ate fresh mango everyday. He calls it Celestial Fruit. Although over there they are not green and red they are all yellow. That kind is actually much better. The right way to eat a mango according to him is you cut it in half. Then you cut around the seed. Then you scoop the rest of the fruit out from the skin. To make bigger chunks I would peel the skin off first and then cut it up. Enjoy!!

I am at a loss here...I love mango, but, like you cannot cut it without wasting more than half of it. I will try Jessica's method- sounds simple enough. I love mango salsa, too, but can't help out there, either. I am not very good tonight, sorry.
Love the mango pictures, though!

I have seen it done by cutting the mango in half, then removing the pit, and then using your paring knife, score it to the skin in a pattern of bite sized pieces, then invert the skin so the the flesh is then fanned out to the outside, and simply cut off of skin with paring knife. Make sense?

My Brendon too served in the Philippines and I did not really take an opportunity to have them until he came home. His letters were everything mango. You have been well schooled in the cutting, I will help do research on a good recipe, because I do love a good mango salsa.!

Here is a link for some great mango recipes

I can't seem to get it to link up so you will have to copy and paste it in your browser. I cut mine like the previous poster. Cut in half as close to the pit as you can, then score the flesh with a knife, then you push the skin side out so that the fruit is extended then slice the scored fruit off the skin. It is cubed and ready to go. Repeat with the other sides.

I haven't had Mango's since our trip to Hawaii my senior year. I'll have to try them again. It actually never occurs to me to buy them at the store. Are the in season now? Apparently everyone loves them.

Hi Lauri,

This is Shannon, Cynthia's friend. I have been stalking your blog since you started and love it.

As for the mango, you can actually get a "mango slice" in a kithcen store. It looks very much like an apple slicer that you push down on and it cuts right around the odd shaped mango seed leaving you just the meat and peel. Good Luck!
