When did college professors go from looking like this....

...to this. Seriously, my professor came to class looking like the guy on the left. I have a thing about professionalism. It's hard to take someone seriously when they look like they just came off the golf course.

As long as I'm ranting...you ought to see how the teachers at my school dress. I think it would make a good psychological study to see if there is a correlation between the casualness of a teacher's attire and the behavior of the students.

Agree.

Yes siree! Being professional needs to come back in style. Everyone has become so much more casual, but it is not appropriate in so many places. Like College! (((Hugs))) to you!

I totally agree- and Dana actually wears a shirt and tie at least one day a week, and tennis shoes only on Fridays. THe school has a dress code and the kids have to wear only 2 colors of polos and 2 colors of pants- with shirts tucked in and a belt! Dana loves it and so sees a difference in behaviors. He sticks to polos and collared shirts always- the kids love it!

Even in elementary school where ok, I get it, the teachers are up and down a lot and have to be able to wrestle kids. But do they have to dress like they just finished their yard work at home before they came in? sheesh!

I entirely agree!

I say "BENSON FOR PRESIDENT!!" You'd clean the place up. Plus you'd have a cool office.

What do you think? How's class?

I think there is a correlation with students' behavior and how the teacher dresses. I have seen it a few times. I am for strict dress code and even uniforms.

I totally agree Lauri. It has been proven that children perform better when wearing uniforms to school. That was a study done one grammar school age children. But I would certainly think it would hold true no matter what age.

Well put. As a society we have become too casual about too many things. Call me stressed out and uptight but I think teachers show students how important an education is (or isn't) by their own words, actions and attitudes.

hmmm- very interesting! I agree with you! Besides, who wouldn't want to look like Harrison Ford? He is beautiful!!! :)

I agree too. I think looking the part of a professional is so important. There is a girl at my salon who comes to work everyday looking like a hooker, and it bothers me so much. I hate that our management says they've spoken to her about what she wears, but yet she doesn't change. If I were the manager I would say bye bye hunny. If you can't come to work looking like a professional, then you can't come to work here.

I know that girl at Genny's salon she is talking about! And believe me, she does look like she belongs on the corner of 6th at midnight. I would have a hard time taking a professor seriously who dressed like that too. I remember in grade school the teachers dressed so nice... why can't they still?

I have never see a professor at my school that was dressed casually. They are always dressed in slacks or suits and always with ties.

I think you should do your thesis on whether or not teacher's attire affect student behavior. I would LOVE to see the results!!! I always admired the principals I worked for who enforced a dress code. It too was one of my pet peves.

That is too funny! I wish Harrison Ford would have been my college professor. Although I did have a T.A. who Natalie Kirk and I were in love with. He made going to class worth it. You are right we have become very relaxed as a society especially in schools.

i agree and I think there is a connection. I've worked in preschools and daycares where the teachers go by their first name (ex. Ms. Elise) and the teachers dress more casual. In the schools that teachers go by their last name and dress professional the kids are a lot more respectful to their teachers.
