The Widow Benson

July marks eight years that I've been a widow. EIGHT YEARS!!! I can't believe it's been that long. Sometimes it seems just like yesterday and other times it seems like forever. Widow isn't a title I ever planned to have...especially at age 43. Who would?

Anyway, rather than dwell on that, here are a few of the things I've accomplished in the past 8 years.

1. Had a son come home from his mission

2. Had a daughter get married

3. Had a son graduate from high school 4. Received a Bachelors degree
5. Had another son go on a mission
...and come home.

6. Moved from here:

to here:
7. Got my first job in more than 20 years.
8. Became a grandma once....
twice....
three times:
9. I'm now half way finished with my Masters degree.

10. AND I got out of bed every day and moved myself forward even when I sometimes wanted to stay in bed and pull the covers over my head.

Although I would go back to my "old life" in a minute if it were possible, I wouldn't want to give up the incredible lessons I've learned and the growth I've experienced. I am truly a different person than I was.

You are such a strong woman Lauri! Good for you for all that you have accomplished! Going back to work after 20 years must have been hard! It looks like you really enjoy it though. And your masters too. Way to go. I am sure there have been many days that you just wanted to pull the covers up over your head. But by not doing so, you are an inspiration to many!

That is an amazing list of big life events - and all of them carried off successfully. Kevin would be proud of everything, wouldn't he? I miss him.

Reading your post, makes my cry, smile and wish I could still see you, and share a friendship like we were neighbors. You have been through more than most ever have to endure. And come out a stronger, and wiser woman. You are an excellent example of grace to us all.

You have always been an amazing and strong woman. To accomplish all you have with the Lord at your side, and Kevin watching over you, truly a lesson taught to all who have seen any part of your graceful undertaking of life. Thank you for your example, and know we are still amazed by you.

Hi Lauri,
Yes, our grandson Noah lives very near us too. He and Erika live only about 1 1/2 mile away. Same as Gennifer and Jake and Hannah. We are so, so lucky to have all of our kids and family right here. We get to enjoy them so much!!

I've been thinking about Dad a lot this week, too and wondering what to post about it. Yours was perfect. I miss him, too.

...only I'm not sure that you can count three Grandkids as something you accomplished. I was the one who had to deliver them.

This is just incredible and so are you. I can't imagine the pain you have experienced and yet it is awesome that you pushed forward and did the things you needed despite wanting to just crawl back under the covers. I can tell you are an amazing mother and grandmother and I am sure your husband is looking down and smiling. :)

Lauri, as one of your sisters, it was hard to see you have to go through this trial in your life so young. Yet, you have been truly inspirational. I have watched you grow in so many ways. You showed all of us how we should handle the hard times in our lives. I say hats off to you my sister!!!

I am certain you weren't seeking praise, probably looking for a way to divert your thoughts from what could be feeling sorry for yourself. But it seems impossible not to stand in awe of you. WOW. Most admirable in my eyes is the getting out of bed when you feel like staying in bed and crying. You've surely heard it and know it and I doubt its what you need or want to hear but I can't help say you are inspiring!! I hope that if/when this happens to me I'd be able to take on your daily accomplishment as well as you have.

I'm a little slow with the comment.. but better late than never! I just wanted to say I think you are amazing and have always looked up to you. I too have no doubt your husband is proud of the woman that you are and all that you have accomplished

WOW! I feel blessed to know a stalwart, faithful woman like you, Lauri. You shine, girl, you really shine! And you have kids that make me laugh (Katie's comment for example). You're the first person I've met that can keep up with a husband who's in heaven already and that's quite an accomplishment! I love you to pieces.
