Fashion and Footwear

Before school started, I had my very fashionable sister-in-law come over and go through my closet and tell me what I needed. Her answer: COLOR. Duh, why didn't I think of that? Everything in there was black, white, beige, and brown. So I went shopping and look at some of these fun colors I picked up...
This is the outfit I put together today...
Last year, I would have just gone with the gray slacks and white top but the orange sweater really kicked it up a notch. I added a black watch, black purse, and these shoes...

That was a long introduction for the post I really wanted to write about...these shoes. First of all, they are from Payless and cost me $17.00 five years ago. Who says cheap shoes aren't worth it??

Anyway, I really debated wearing them as I went off to school because when I took 2 steps across the kitchen, the heel caught in the cuff of my pants and I nearly tripped. I really didn't want that to happen at school...middle school students would have had a hay-day with one of their teachers tripping and falling. I wore them anyway and got through the day without incident. That wasn't the case three years ago when I was wearing them.

It was a Sunday and I had kicked these shoes off when I got home from church. Jeff and I were sitting around the house having a friendly discussion when I jumped off the chair to get a book (OK, it was the scriptures) to prove my point. I tripped over these shoes, the strap wrapped around my toe, and down I went in a VERY awkward position. Jeff was laughing hysterically and so was I although I was screaming in pain at the same time. When I finally looked down, my second toe was laying sideways over the other three toes. I called a nurse-neighbor of mine to come home and pop it back in to the socket. She took one look at it and said she didn't feel comfortable even touching it, it looked pretty bad.

I had Jeff take me to urgent care. He dropped me off as close as he could to the door and I hopped in on one foot. They immediately came over and put me in a wheel chair and took me back for X-rays. The doctor told me that it was broken (hello! I could have given myself that diagnosis) and told me to see a surgeon the next day.

When I got a hold of a foot doctor the next day, he took one look at the X-rays and at my foot and told me it was the worse toe break he'd ever seen. He suggested surgery to put a pin in the toe. ARE YOU KIDDING ME? I told him I thought that was overkill and asked if there was any other option. He said he could try to pop it back in to place. That was the option I was looking for but asked if he'd numb it before he started that lovely procedure.

After my foot was good and numb, he strapped me in to a chair (yes, I was strapped in to the chair so he wouldn't pull me off--that's how hard he was tugging). Although I couldn't feel a thing, it was very disconcerting hearing him grunt and growl with each pull.

In a few minutes, it looked good, he taped it up, and made me wear an ugly boot for the rest of the summer (not a great fashion statement). After 6 weeks, everything was back to normal and I haven't had any trouble since.

The moral of this story: PUT YOUR SHOES AWAY!

*I wish you could hear me tell this story. It's much funnier when you HEAR it told and SEE me act it out.

I remember when that happened. You told me about it and even though I felt bad for you, I couldn't help but laugh. I'm glad you still think it is funny. Hope everything is going well at school.

If you're really trying to serve your readership - keep wearing those shoes and sooner or later you'll have a school experience that's even better than that. I'm always interested in others people foibles.

Were you still at home when dad would be tired of all of us leaving our shoes in the family room and he would open the sliding glass door and just chuck them as far as he could? We would get up in the morning and get ready for school, and walk out to the alley and retrieve our school shoes and head off to Jr. High. Sadly, it didn't solve the problem. I still leave my shoes in the living room. But fortunately I've never broken any bones because of them. Glad you didn't have any lasting problems. It would be sad if you couldn't wear those cute strappy sandals because your baby toe poked out permanently. (Or maybe strappy sandals would be all you could ever wear to let that toe poke out permanently)

I laughed when I read Cindy's memory of our shoes being thrown outside, I remember the same. Yep, your toe sounds like an ugly experience. About a year ago Steve kept complaining about the top of his foot hurting for about two months. I would just say, "oh it's nothing" finally he went to the doctor. He had a fracture on the top of his foot. Needless to say I felt a little bad :-)
